Il 16 dicembre 1972 la canzone Me and Mrs Jones spodesta I Am Woman di Helen Reddy’s dal primo posto nella Billboard Hot 100.
Il brano di Billy Paul mantiene la prima posizione per tre settimane.
Scritta da Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff e Carey Gilbert (trio che contribuì sensibilmente a definire il sound del Philadelphia Soul) la canzone ha idealmente il suo perno tematico nel rapporto extraconiugale tra il cantante e Mrs Jones.
Il preludio di un rapporto consumato lontano da occhi indiscreti è annunciato dall’intro del sassofono che riprende le note Secret Love di Doris Day. I due protagonisti si incontrano ogni giorno allo stesso posto e alla stessa ora sebbene siano consapevoli del tradimento che si sta compiendo.

Poi arriva l’ora di lasciarsi, ma i due si separano con la certezza che il giorno dopo si incontreranno ancora:

The same place, the same time
Kenny Gamble racconta come lui e Huff ebbero l’ispirazione in un bar dello Schubert Building, edificio dove si trovava anche la loro casa discografica:
This guy used to come into the bar every day – little guy that looked like a judge. We’re songwriters, so we’re always thinking about a song. The next day he came in again, and every day after he’d come in, this girl would come in 10-15 minutes after he’d get there, and they’d sit in the same booth, then go to the jukebox and play the same songs. We said, ‘That’s me and Mrs. Jones.’ Then, when they’d get ready to leave, he would go his way and she would go hers. It could have been his daughter, his niece, anybody, but we created a story that there was some kind of romantic connection between these people, so we went upstairs to our office and wrote the song.
Il singolo venne rilasciato dalla Gamble and Huff’s Philadelphia International records. Il lato B era la cover di Your Song di Elton John.
Sulle note dolci e sensuali si innestano come contro canto di Paul le voci altrettanto maliziose e soavi di Carla Benson, Evette Benton and Barbara Ingram, sotto il nome del gruppo The Sweeties.
Dato il grande successo ne sono state eseguite varie cover, tra cui ricordiamo quella di Micheal Bublé del 2007, estratta come singolo dall’album Call Me Irresponsible e dei The Dramatics inserita nel film il diario di Bridget Jones.
